Hillside is a hands on Bible teacher training program. The goal of Hillside is to train people to be effective Bible teaching leaders across all spheres of church life. The name is drawn from the picture of Jesus sitting on the side of a hill, teaching his disciples. Whether you aim to be a kid's church or youth group leader, a Bible study group teacher or even a preacher, Hillside is designed to provide the theory and opportunities to practice the skills and life needed to faithfully teach God's word
LearnEach month we'll cover a new topic, with some ministry specific input, and set reading. You'll learn a comprehensive set of tools to help your personal walk with Jesus and your ability to teach the Bible to others.

ReflectHillside is designed to help you be a leader for life. Part of that process is learning to reflect on what you do, so that even after the formal training is over, you can continue growing and developing in a self-directed way.

Recognising that not all of us are Einstein, Hillside is based around similar ideas as TAFE. Directed, practical, reflective, and with a strong expectation of applying learning along the way.
Hillside runs across 3 terms of the year. Each month involves a 1 hour training session, usually on a Saturday morning, some prescribed reading, and a practical task. Ideally, we want all participants in Hillside to be involved in a Bible teaching ministry already - perhaps in a trainee capacity - as an avenue to put into practice the course content. The dates for 2024 can all be found in the Church Calendar (you can access the calendar here) - look for "Bible Teacher Tafe". The first meeting is Saturday May 4th. |

Who is it for?
Hillside is open to existing and potential Bible Teachers at St Barnabas. This includes Kid's Church, Youth Group and Growth Group leaders, Scripture teachers, and even preachers!
How much does it cost?
The entire course costs $35 (payable up front). This includes the reading book (Leading better Bible studies by Karen & Rod Morris), course notes and a guide to the practical exercises.
Do I need to be in a ministry position already?
Because of the nature of the course (practical and hands on), it is necessary to be involved in a Bible Teaching ministry. This might mean joining a ministry team as a trainee for the duration of Hillside. If you are not yet in a teaching position, reach out and speak to a staff member to have a conversation about whether this is the right thing for you.
What if I can't make a session?
Hillside isn't a small commitment - it's important to take the task of training to teach God's word seriously. That said, we aim to set you up to teach for the rest of your life. The investment is worth it. While it's understandable that you may miss a session, we expect that participants will prioritise each monthly meeting, and work hard to get the reading and work done in between.
