Who are we? Barney's playgroup is run by members of St Barnabas Anglican Church. We aim to provide a service to the community by running a group where mothers and other carers can socialise and also participate in age-appropriate activities with their pre-school-aged child/ren.
What do you do at playgroup? A typical playgroup morning runs like this: 10:00 - Set up and free play 10:20 - Sing our hello song on the mat 10:30 - Morning tea 10:50 - Story and then craft or activity 11:20 - Pack up inside toys and then outside play on the front lawn. 12:00 - End of playgroup.
Can anyone come? Yes - this playgroup is as much about carers getting together to chat over a cup of tea and helping each other as about the children - so no baby is too small to come! Grandparents, fathers and all other carers are welcome. You do not have to belong to the church or be Christian to come.
Do you teach the Bible? Each week we pray before morning tea to say thanks to God, and we sing some fun, simple children's songs about Jesus. At special events (Easter, Christmas) and occasionally throughout the term, we give a simple lesson about God. If you would like your child to learn more about the Bible, we are very happy to have them at our Kids Church or creche. Look at these sections of the website to find out more.
Does it cost anything? We do ask that once you start coming regularly that you pay $2 if you have one child or $3 for more than one. The first one or two times are free. If you are having difficulty paying, just mention it to one of the leaders and we can organise something - we are here to help you, not burden you.
Do I need to bring anything? Bring yourself and a child! In warm weather, bring a hat and sunscreen, and a change of clothes for your child as we often do water play. Please also bring a piece of fruit as a contribution to morning tea (we provide biscuits and water for the children, and tea and coffee for the carers).
Do I need to do anything? When you start coming regularly we ask that you help set up and clean up as you are able - we do understand that sometimes having a child makes this difficult, but helping when you can is appreciated.
Can I just drop my child off for the duration of playgroup? No. If you arrange for another person/member to look after your child at playgroup, this is between you and that person. As a playgroup, we can not be responsible for your child - we need you there.
Do I need to take a turn at craft and a story? No - only those that are running the playgroup do craft and story time. We encourage you to take the time to just relax and participate in the activities with your child.
What are my responsibilities at playgroup? You need to supervise and discipline your own child. Please help your child join in if possible - some children find it hard to sit down for the story and are aided by a carers lap. Other children are not even ready for this, but if you could make sure they are playing with the quiet toys and you are not chatting to other adults in story time, it really makes story time easier.
Children not allowed on the stage, in the store room or in the kitchen (unless supervised for a specific reason eg. washing hands). Please do not bring a sick child.
We will give you a letter and a welcome pack the first time you visit us which hopefully will answer any other questions.
